Men on Boats presents the story of ten explorers who were sent on the United States government’s first official expedition into the American West to map the rapids of the Green and Colorado Rivers – what we now call the Grand Canyon. The play explores the 1869 journey into America’s rapids through John Wesley Powell’s journals and notes. While Powell’s journals inform the tale, the play – through gender and race fluid casting – offers reflection on the role of identity in shaping exploration narratives and historical memory. A touching and funny show, Men on Boats asks us to investigate what constitutes American identity, by placing the archetypal explorers on the bodies of those who don’t often get to voice history, and have often been short changed by it.
